Now they want to do away with valedictorian etc.
« on: June 23, 2009, 07:13:54 AM »
Hi,

Just saw on Fox that they want to do away with class ranking in high school.  Why prey tell?  When one is not the valedictorian, etc. and they see the other people being rewarded for their achievements, it hurts the feeling of those who did not make it.

When I went to high school I helped make the upper half of the class possible.....and even I am smart enough to say that you do not want to reward the underachievers at the expense of achievers.  You reward success and people will strive for those positive rewards.  Heck, if I were to be recognized when I graduated from high school I could have been the president of the "get by" club.  I put in the least amount of effort to get a diploma as anyone in my class.  I just got by....

Why do I think this is just another step toward communism?  Make everyone the same....mediocre????

regards,

They've already been doing this by having a top 10 of the class. Our school system does that. it was done to lessen some of the, they felt, underhanded stuff that was going on with the top students to get their valedictorian status since that status is rarely rewarded anymore to someone strictly 4.0. They get AP and other credits to boost GPA's super high. Not sure the reasoning for the district you are speaking of, but some have done it not in the interest of communalism but in the interest of solving some of the unethical behavior that was going on among top students.

Now, as a summa cum laude grad myself, I don't want to see top recognition done away with. You certainly make sacrifices to make those top achievements that likely other people did not. I never get why I have to care about someone else's feelings who didn't get an award when they didn't care about mine when I was sitting there for 6 hours studying for an exam or several days getting ready for a project. It seems some of our nutty decision makers forget that there was a point in the academic career where it wasn't 'fair' for those who are getting the top honors ie they missed out on social events, family gatherings, 'fun stuff', and things they otherwise wanted to do in the interest of excelling at their particular field of study. We all put energy into the things we value--sometimes society rewards us for them, sometimes it doesn't. We take our accolades and knocks either way. To take away a rewarding component from those who value excellence in this particular regard in the interest of coddling the feelings of those who didn't until the rewards were divied out is reprehensible.

Well they have already taken away the dreaded red pen from the teachers in our elementary schools. :whatever: Can't jar the little darlings by putting red marks on their mistakes now can we? I nearly died when my kiddo came home with a test graded in green glittery ink.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

This just another step in the"wussification of America".  It goes right along with other BS that they propose for children and teens.

So the quarterbacks and strikers can get acclaim for their accomplishments, yet the smartest person in school can't?

But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948
