Who the **** cares what Jesse Helms favored? Over here on the conservative side of the aisle, we're individualists. We don't need someone to tell us how we think. Probably why we can't form rallies as well as the left.

Well that and the fact that most conservsatives actually work for a living and don't have time to rally on a Monday - Friday afternoon.

WTF?  I mean come on people.  Just because I'm mostly German with a bit of French and English thrown in, doesn't mean I shouldn't also receive an apology!  Gosh darn it; Rich, Rebel, Lanie, Thor, Lug-nut... all of you should apologize to me for something neither of us had a part in!!!!

On a related note, soft baked chocolate chip cookies are an acceptable substitute in lieu of an apology  :-)

Strange things about slavery.

There were slaves in Africa long before there were slaves here.
Most of the slaves that were brought to the US from Africa were sold or traded to the slave traders by other Africans.
The last time I checked the continent with the highest incident of slavery in modern times was Africa.

Some conjecture on slavery...

We are led to believe that slaves in the US were constantly beaten. Based on my experience living in farming country I find this a little difficult to believe.

Before I go any farther let's think about farming in modern times. First, farm equipment is usually very expensive. Second, farm equipment is usually essential to the farmer's financial bottom-line. As a result, most farmers take care of their equipment. With a few exceptions, they don't beat the hell out of their expensive and needed equipment.

When slavery was going on in the US, the slave owners viewed the slaves as equipment. Much like farm equipment today, slaves were very expensive to purchase. Slaves were also, at the time, essential to the plantation owners financial bottom-line. With that in mind I don't think that slaves were constantly beaten. Don't get me wrong, I know it happened on occasion. I just don't think it was as wide spread and as common as some history books would have you believe.

I believe that slave beatings became such a focal point because that was one of the few things that separated the southern plantation from the northern factories. The northern abolitionists couldn't really focus on the slaves' work conditions because the work conditions in the northern factories were also dreadful.

I also believe that focusing on slave beatings, even if they were wide spread, softens the evilness of slavery. I say that because the bad thing about slavery wasn't that the slaves may have been beaten. Nor was the bad thing that the slaves had to work hard in poor conditions. The bad thing about slavery (the thing that makes it evil) was the slave's lack of freedom. The slave's entire existence was tied to the will of the slave owner.

I say all of this because I think it is somewhat relevant today. It's relevant not only because of the discussion of apologies, but also because with each new program and policy that Zero and the capitol hill donkey show enacts our existence becomes more tied to the will of the federal government. Zero and the donkey show, in many ways, are acting like they own us.

Electing the big "0" is apology enough........

What I'd like to know is, when will he, if ever, apologize for making slaves outta all of us.

I still want an apology for the US government killing a third of my people (Cherokee Indians) in the Trail of Tears...
I'm part Carib indian; from which the Carribean islands draws their names. They were some of the first tribes to meet white europeans. Their culture was devastated far beyond that of mainland American tribes.

Yet, they were also cannibals. Is an apology due to the cannibals?

How about tribes that counted coup? People got so exercised because Rodney King got a beatdown after getting hopped-up on PCP and leading the cops on a 100+ mile/hour chase but were supposed to feel sorry for a society that ritualized bashing people's skulls with rocks on sticks in the name of proving one's manhood.

And I'll wager the tribes the whites found had probably displaced a few tribes themselves in the 20,000 some-odd years before the honkies ever showed-up.

Wanna get deeper? How about the pre-human species exterminated by humanity during its evolutionary ascension? Do homo sapiens owe an apology to cro magnon for the competition of resources? (liberals do profess to be evolutionists you know...they insist on it exclusivey in schools) "No War for Elk!"

And, no, it's not a false analogy because if you ever read John C. Calhoun's "Disquisition of Government" you'll see he justifies white ownership of blacks based on white's technological superiority, i.e. steam engines and gunpowder (ironically, christians were the first abolitionists).

Maybe instead of the US apologising the evolutionists should apologise.

What about those in the US that fought for abolition and civil rights? Why are they subject to this collectivist guilt?

How about the political party that opposed abolition and used it as an excuse to commit treason? I bet you'll never hear a democrat call for that shit.

Wanna do something about slavery? Tell the muslims to stop taking slaves today.

It's all a bunch of manufactured outrage.
According to the Bible, "know" means "yes."

Will the Yankees apologize to the Rebels?

Take a break and read about Sherman and how the slaves had to be "freed" at the point of a gun.

I want an apology from the French.  I had ancestors who were French aristocracy, and they were forced to flee to America during the French Revolution.  I could be a freakin' Duchess if they hadn't been forced out of their homes.  Where's my compensation?

Actually, you owe the French aristocracy a thank you because they ensured that you are here instead.

You could say the same thing about Negroes that live here today. 99.99999% of them living in Africa would not have good food, decent housing, a TV, a cell phone, a car, health insurance, etc., etc. Everyone that lives in the US should thank their lucky stars that they are living in the greatest country in the world. Did I mention opportunity that their homeland does not offer to the lower class.

Ungrateful liberals in the US should be worrying about making a better life for themselves rather than bitching about stupid crap like an apology.

I think the liberals should do a lot more things like this.  That way they'd have less time to screw up important things.

Uh, I was actually poking fun at that argument by saying that.

As for the last line, I agree, except the liberal part. I know lots of liberals who have made good lives for themselves.

Let's see:
The Roman Catholic Church should apologize to all of Europe for persecuting non-Catholics and Protestants.

China and Japan should apologize to Korea for invading and taking their land.

England should apologize to Ireland, Scotland, and Wales for invading and taking their land.

It could go on and on. Slave reparation was done in the form of Liberia and Sierra Leone. Yes, they are failed nations, but they were for slaves who wanted to go back to Africa. Also, the Civil War was fought in part to end slavery. Blacks fought for both the Confederacy and Union.

I am Korean and China and Japan have invaded Korea so many times. China took what northeast part of China, which was Korea's land many years ago. Where is my piece of land? Well, I am happy here in America.

I think they probably made good lives for themselves too, although they may not have made good lives for others.
