BAGHDAD, Feb 18 (Reuters) - Three people were killed and 15 wounded when a barrage of mortars landed near Baghdad's international airport on Monday, the Iraqi military said.

It was one of the deadliest such attacks in months in the capital.

Major-General Qassim Moussawi, spokesman for Iraq's military in Baghdad, said the mortar bombs hit the mainly Sunni Khadhra district to the west of the airport in the south of the city.

Mortar attacks were a regular occurrence in the capital but have fallen dramatically in recent months, mirroring a general fall in violence across Iraq.

Iraqi Capital Rocked By Mortar Blasts - AFP

BAGHDAD (AFP)--A barrage of mortar rounds rocked Baghdad at dusk on Monday, with some falling near the international airport and others in the fortified Green Zone, officials and witnesses said.

The blasts, which could be heard across Baghdad, prompted guards at checkpoints near the airport to take cover, an AFP correspondent said.

U.S. military base Camp Victory is located beside the airport and is often the target of mortar and rocket attacks.

An Iraq Defense Ministry official said that 10 mortar rounds landed in Baghdad's highly fortified Green Zone, which houses Iraqi government offices and foreign embassies.
