Baseball of course is enormously popular, but in a different sense, where even towns of 70-80 people have baseball and softball teams, and baseball diamonds. Lighted playing fields with bleachers, concession stands, free parking, the whole bit.
Around here, baseball is something one plays all his life, while football is pretty much over for most, after high school.
I read somewhere that Nebraska has more golfers per capita, than any other state, and it wouldn't surprise me if our per capita of amateur baseball and softball players exceeds that of all, or most, other states. I have no idea why this is, but there it is.
