Oh my.

Greinke being compared with greats
Right-hander's great start like those of Johnson and Valenzuela

It has been building for a couple weeks now, the wave of excitement over Zack Greinke growing with each start as more and more national media train their eyes on the Royals young sensation.

On Monday night in Kansas City, in front of a solid weekday crowd of 21,843 at the newly renovated Kauffman Stadium, under the lights of the increased media attention, on the heels of gracing the cover of Sports Illustrated, the 25-year-old right-hander with a well-documented and public battle with social anxiety disorder took the hill and delivered a gem that put him forever into the discussion about the best starts ever to a season.....

I'm glad he made it onto my fantasy team. Now if only I had Lincecum as well.

Which team is yours in the "Conservatives 2009" league?  Hell, I wish I had Greinke.

I do have Johan . . .

I'm not in that league. I'm on one with a different board.

This is Kansas City.

In the Great Plains.

The Kansas City Royals have the smallest baseball "market" in the United States.

For Kansas City, that's not an outstanding crowd, but it's good crowd.

And yet you have no problem packing 75K into Arrowhead for the Chiefs.

And yet you have no problem packing 75K into Arrowhead for the Chiefs.

It's a cultural thing.

Football has always been more of a draw on the Great Plains, than baseball.

Baseball of course is enormously popular, but in a different sense, where even towns of 70-80 people have baseball and softball teams, and baseball diamonds.  Lighted playing fields with bleachers, concession stands, free parking, the whole bit.

Around here, baseball is something one plays all his life, while football is pretty much over for most, after high school.

I read somewhere that Nebraska has more golfers per capita, than any other state, and it wouldn't surprise me if our per capita of amateur baseball and softball players exceeds that of all, or most, other states.  I have no idea why this is, but there it is.

Okay, I just realized my response above sounds utterly contradictory.

Because one plays football, usually only through high school and then gives up playing, attendance at football games (college and professional) is high.

Because one plays baseball or softball most of his life, attendance at baseball games (college and professional) is no great shakes, because everybody's on the fields rather than sitting up in the bleachers.

I hope I didn't mess that up.

That is a pretty good crowd for Kauffman on a weekday. A lot of fans are leery to return after about 20 years of perennial cellar-dwelling.
