Violations of 'Islamic teachings' take deadly toll on Iraqi women
BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- The images in the Basra police file are nauseating: Page after page of women killed in brutal fashion -- some strangled to death, their faces disfigured; others beheaded. All bear signs of torture.

The women are killed, police say, because they failed to wear a headscarf or because they ignored other "rules" that secretive fundamentalist groups want to enforce.

(snip)

After the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003, Sawsan says, the situation was "the best." But now, she says, it's "the worst."

"We thought there would be freedom and democracy and women would have their rights. But all the things we were promised have not come true. There is only fear and horror."

1. As long as the women do nothing about it, the society will not change.
But it's not our problem. If the society is to change the women of Islam are going to have to change it.

3. Bush lied about liberating Iraqis
Edited on Sat Feb-09-08 10:54 AM by DesertRat
Remember those photos of Iraqi men and women proudly holding up their inked fingers for western cameras after voting in their new "democracy"? They were presented to the world by our government as an indication of a policy that would liberate the Iraqis.

Nothing could be further from the truth!

Like all things in DUmmyland, they never place the blame on the cause of problem only the solution.

It's the islam stupid.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

This is not a smart thing to say, oh DUmmie thunder rising.  It can be applied to so many things you wouldn't like.

We could apply it to abortion:

"As long as the Christians do nothing about it, the society will not change.
But it's not our problem. If the society is to change the Christians are going to have to change it."

See?  It doesn't sound so profound and intelligent to you now, does it?

As for women trapped in Islam Hell, sometimes evil overwhelms decency to the extent nothing can change without help from beyond the borders of a particular society.   Only an equally evil person would think, a Republican president sits in the White House, so nothing should be done to help those who cannot help themselves, because it helps to enforce his worldview.

Yes, because as we all know it's oh so much better to be raped tortured by Saddam, his sons, and their minions...at least they weren't (the horror) RELIGIOUS! Of course, now there's law enforcement to deal with it (hence the files) back in the good old days it was "the law" that was DOING the rape & torture, but those are mere details. It's more important to be anti-Bush than have any true compassion for caring for and protecting women. Then again, what do I know...I'm just a pampered Domestic Goddess.

There is nothing we can do about the way Islamic men treat their women, except maybe on our own home soil. The Saudis have a long history of abuse towards women, but they don't see it as abuse. They see it as "God's Law", or at least their interpretation of it. It matters little to a woman of course who is on the receiving end of a stoning or a public whipping.

As far as Iraq goes, what are we going to do? If memory serves their new constitution provides women with equal protection under the law but a group of goat herders whose philosophy is stuck in the 7th century are not going to pay any attention to the "laws of man". They will continue to treat women according to Islamic law. This is a way of life with these people, it is ingrained in them and is as impossible to change as fingerprints. :censored:
