Do Canadians really have to wait in long lines for health care?
Posted by cushla_machree on Sun Feb-03-08 06:26 PM

I got into a discussion at work the other day with someone. We started talking about health care, and immediately this person told me.

1. Canada has long lines
2. Europeans aren't happy with their system, it costs a lot and doesn't deliver.

Where do people come up with this. How long is the wait in canada????

Americans have been hammered into believing that we have the best health care in the world, but i would only agree if one adds: IF you can afford it. I think it all boils down to the fact that americans are inherently selfish in some respects. Then general feeling in the room was, I have never had a problem with my health plan. Therefore, nothing is amiss.

What will it take to pull the wool off of people's eyes? Because your plan is 'excellent' who cares about everyone else? DO you really think your insurance company won't **** you over at some point down the line? What does this boil down to, that people accept that status quo because, changing the system would AFFECT them in some way? Maybe they would have to schedule their physical 5 months in advance instead of 2. THE HORROR! Maybe they might see a tax on their income.

But what never is discussed: You already are paying for your health care, even if you get it through work. Your salary might increase if your company no longer has to pay for ever increasing premiums created by the private insurance companies. You would no long have to pay co-pays and deductibles. A single universal system would be more efficient, it would GIVE ALL AMERICANS coverage.

Are we all self absorbed so much that we would rather keep a broken system then create a new one that everyone can use? Or is it just general mistrust of the government, and believing that they could never deliver year after year?

Ask any of our Canadian DUers here and they will tell you differently how their system works. Also go to the frequently asked questions (FAQ) at this link and they answer all those BS Harry and Louise RW lies with facts.

there arent any long lines... there are just fewer and fewer doctors willing to practice there. the ones that are there in some of the smaller cities dont speak English, and you can imagine how easy that is to deal with if youre a patient.

my father in law, waits months for appts to open up so he can get his MRIs and bone scans. he had cancer, and is now cancer free but it requires he be seen to keep an eye on it.

i'd say waiting 8-10 months for a bone scan is a bit long..

but Canada isnt where the technology is going to be discovered - and the good doctors all want to practice in the US where they can at least make a good living.

competition is a good thing in medicine.. it keeps the cream of the crop here in our country.

Thanks for sharing.  I believe that competition is a good thing anywhere - too bad it's a concept foreign to DUmmies.

The only competition the DUmmies don't mind is who will get the last hit off the bong.

I told this on CU, so I want it here too.

I have an internet friend in Great Britain.  Her name is Frances.  She is financially well-off and middle-aged.  Frances had cancer (female type) and breast cancer.  The system in GB just about let her die.  She flew to NYC and sought the best care in the world.  Frances has been cancer-free for a number of years now.  She still returns to NYC twice a year to see her doctor and her dentist.

Frances knows she is lucky because she could afford to buy elsewhere what she needed to save her life.  She could afford to take charge of her situation and tell The Government System to KMA.  She doesn't have a kind word to say about socialized medicine.  She wouldn't wish it for anyone.

It is said that branches draw their life from the vine. Each is separate yet all are one as they share one life giving stem . The Bible tells us we are called to a similar union in life, our lives with the life of God. We are incorporated into him; made sharers in his life. Apart from this union we can do nothing.
