Officers told her 'rights' were 'only in the movies'

The mother of an 11-year-old boy abducted by SWAT team members and taken to a hospital after he was bruised while horsing around is warning members of her community of the "Nazi" tactics she endured, including a statement from the officers that her "rights" were "only in the movies."

The case involves Jon Shiflett, who injured himself while trying to grab the handle of a door on a car his sister was driving. He slipped and fell to the pavement, hitting his head. His parents treated him for the injury and rejected paramedics' demands that they be allowed to take him to a hospital.

Nearly 36 hours later, SWAT team members broke into the family home in western Colorado near New Castle and took Jon to a hospital, where a doctor said the family should keep ice on his bruise, exactly the treatment the family already had been providing.

Tina Shiflett, Jon's mother, has written a letter to the editor to a local newspaper, the Post Independent, "to awaken, alert and appall any who read it and hear the bells ringing."

"A fully armed SWAT team broke into our home, slammed my children to the floor face down with their hands behind their backs and shoved a gun in my daughter's face and handcuffed her…" her letter said.

In a separate letter to WND, she elaborated a little more fully.

During the attack, she wrote, "One (officer) grabbed my daughter Beth (18 years), who also had a gun to her face, slammed her down and kneed her in the back and held her in that position… My sons Adam (14) and Noah (only 7) lay down willingly, yet they were still forced to put their hands behind their backs and were yelled at to keep their heads down.

"My daughter Jeanette was coming out from the back bedroom when she was grabbed, drug down the hallway, across a couch and slammed to the ground," she said. "The officers then began throwing scissors and screwdrivers across the room (out of our reach, I suppose) and going through our cupboards.

"I asked if I could make a phone call and was told, 'no.' My daughter asked if that wasn't one of our rights. The reply was made, 'That's only in the movies,'" she told WND.

This kind of thing used to only happen in Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia.

I think it is a worrying trend that officials are giving orders for the police to conduct things like this and not being held accountable. It will happen a lot more under hillary.

i had some friends, a married couple, whose house was ransacked by the police and basically just destroyed. apparently, the cops got the house numbers switched for a drug house and did have a search warrant - but for the wrong house.

this was back in 1990, in Dallas. end of Reagan, beginning of Clinton.. i dont blame the president personally, but these kinds of tactics are just crap. the couple was basically told, "uh... sorry" and that was it.

The city should have had to pay for the damage they caused to the house.

The city has been successfully sued in the past for this "mistake".  I don't know why the citizens don't demand the city carry insurance specifically for this very thing.

it seems the general attitude was, "youre lucky we didnt find anything in your house" and the couple just wanted to put it behind them.

i think the fear of the police knowing so much about them made them just walk away, for fear of future reprisals. and this was a white couple..

they werent going to walk away from their house.. so they just cleaned it up.

Appearently they used the SWAT team because the father was a constitutionalist.

Quote
The sheriff said the decision to use SWAT team force was justified because the father was a "self-proclaimed constitutionalist" and had made threats and "comments" over the years.

However, the sheriff declined to provide a single instance of the father's illegal behavior. "I can't tell you specifically," he said.

We should not have to fear our own police like that. That is the kind of bullshit you would expect in a National Socialist or Communist country.

i think its probably one of those nasty jobs that turns some cops into absolute assholes. they probably see enough insanity day in and day out to make them a bit nutty themselves.

its not an excuse, but i think if i just saw the dregs of society for years at a time like they do.. i think it would change me into someone much meaner and far more callous.

ive been of the mind, for a while now, that if citizens would police their own neighborhoods and not rely on the police so much.. these over reactions wouldnt happen.

but that isnt going to happen.. people dont want to get involved, or fear a lawsuit. its just easier to let someone else handle it.

and the police seem to use a high level of force for the smallest infractions these days.. i dont honestly blame them, but its just not always warranted.

I agree.

And the use of disproportionate force for small infractions has been increasing through the years and innocent lives have been harmed or worse (there was one fairly recent case where an innocent woman was killed by a SWAT officer and her child wounded when they raided her house to capture her boyfriend. I saw an article on FR about it not too long ago). Why do the various small-town USAs need heavily armed SWAT teams?

Drugs and drug dealers. Or violent offenders. It only takes one tragic case of someone outrunning and outgunning the police for people to be outraged and to wonder why they weren't well armed, trained and prepared to take these people down without incident.

I'm coming at this from the law enforcement side - first of all, without any real probable cause, this case was handled poorly. They had no business busting into their home with a SWAT team.

There have been several cases that have ended in the death of an innocent person due to overzealous law enforcement or shoddy police work that drags innocent people into the fray. I fully support law enforcement. But in cases like this, I am ashamed and furious because it's senseless and stupid. And it gives good cops a bad name.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

What a horrible thing for that family to go though!  :censored:  If that was me, I would SUE the pants off whoever gave that order.  :bird: What is really scary is, that is what we have to look forward to the way this country is going. :(
