Are grits groceries?

"Are_grits_groceries" has struck me as potential mole, or just a plain ol' idiot.  We've seen a number of posts brought over from this particular DUmmy.

To answer the question, "Are_grits_groceries"? HELL YEAH! If you're southern. Some eggs, bacon/ham/sausage, grits and some hot homemade biscuits (made with real artery clogging, heart stopping lard) with homemade butter/jelly.......BOY! You're talking some kindda fine breakfast there. Really starts the day off right.

Yes they are groceries..until some yankee puts sugar in'em.  Then it's just garbage

Grit?  That's the stuff they put on paper to use for sanding wood and metal.  They're not edible.

I've lived in the south my entire life and have only had grits once or twice.  I guess that's what comes from having a dad from the Bronx and a mother from the UK.  They just weren't served.

I made the mistake of buying canned hominy corn when I wanted sweet yellow corn.  I wondered why it was a little dry.

Canned hominy corn can be made fairly edible if drained and then slowly fried in lots of bacon grease.

I took all my kids "Down South" when my oldest graduated from boot camp.  I think we were in Alabama for breakfast...a couple kids ordered bacon and eggs.  They had no clue what that "weird cream-of-wheat stuff" was on their plates.  One was brave enough to try a bite.   The rest of us  :rotf: at his expression.  Poor kid.   :lmao:

At least he tried.  I'll give him credit for that.  :-)

The two places I've had grits were at the company cafeteria at Ford and some sort of IHOP-style restaurant.  I was not impressed either time.  I was told by one of the guys at Ford that it takes lots of water and a couple hours to do them right.  I can imagine what "good" grits are like, but I've never managed to find any.

I don't know of anything better than a plate full of runny yolk eggs, bacon, and grits all mixed together.  Grits with sharp cheddar cheese mixed is some awesome stuff too.

Oddly enough, some yankee relatives came down south (when I was back home).  They loved grits.

Damn...  I haven't had grits in a while.  Gonna have to stop by a wafflehouse soon.

Witholding grits from children in the South is considered a form of abuse.   :fuelfire: :-)

I love grits...with cheddar cheese in them and a little salt and pepper. When I moved up to Ohio I heard someone ask how to eat 'those' while sitting in a Cracker Barrel...the waitress said to put some brown sugar and syrup in them :thatsright: I about died :thatsright: When she left, I leaned over to them and told them they aren't creamed wheat and that they'd like them a whole lot better with a little sharp cheddar and salt and to eat them with their eggs. Good God, where did I move myself to?  This place is full of uncivilized rubes. :lmao:

My southern/southwestern family were not "grits people", so I didn't learn to appreciate grits until just a few years ago.

I now eat them often.  They are terrific with butter, eggs-over-easy, and bacon.

Grits do not keep or travel well.  They must be fresh and very hot.

I was looking online to see if I could buy grits over here and I came across this horror:
Quote

Start your family's day off right with a fun and wholesome breakfast that includes Quaker Instant Oatmeal Dinosaur Eggs. A prehistoric adventure begins as soon as kids empty the packet of brown sugar-flavoured instant oatmeal into their bowl, add boiling water and begin to stir! Within seconds, dinosaur eggs "hatch" into brightly coloured baby stegosaurs and triceratops. 8 sachets per box.

Our Price: £4.79

That will be a little over $10.  :( But the good news is I can get these quite cheaply, so I can try them without wasting a whole pack if I can't eat them.

In the late 80's I traveled form Clearwater Fla to Sac, going across the south via I 10. I tried, really, but I never had ANY grits that I would consider worth eating. They were like eating flavorless corn goo/soup. :puke: Now, McDonalds serving biscuits and gravy..................................

There ya go. Sometime when the gravy aint available a little bit of butter and some salt & pepper will do the trick. Yes there is a trick to preparing them.
It is said that branches draw their life from the vine. Each is separate yet all are one as they share one life giving stem . The Bible tells us we are called to a similar union in life, our lives with the life of God. We are incorporated into him; made sharers in his life. Apart from this union we can do nothing.

I forgot about Cracker Barrel.  I haven't been to one of those in years.  I may have to pay them a visit next week.

I had breakfast at Cracker Barrel last Friday (I think).  Yes, I had grits.  Very good.

We were going back to Cracker Barrel this morning, but got side tracked by having to babysit a 6 month old due to her father being taken to an emergency room.  Talk about your convoluted relationships, the baby belongs to my ex-daughter-in-law and her S.O.
