 Well, it's part of the strategy perpetrated by the right-wing bigwigs. Get people to believe the media--ALL of it--is liberal. Fact you don't like? It's a liberal invention. The only "unbiased" news sources are the conservative ones, filled with hateful invective. And of course, liberals have to be made out to be just one rung away from evil.

How else can you get low-income voters to vote against their economic interests? How else can you get them to support an overly aggressive foreign policy? The only way can you get them to support a party plank that is based on almost NO facts is to allege that the liberals are evil, that the "facts" reported by the "liberal" media aren't "true" and that every other country in the world is wrong and communist and anti-American.

You know when I come up my driveway there's pasture and an orchard on one side and a bank of trees, Oregon Grape & native bleeding hearts on the other. During the summer the orchard is the perfect place for chickens to take dust baths and the pasture is a favorite place to eat seeds and find bugs and other favorite treats year round. The trees on the opposite side provide shade in the summer and a dry place to sit in the winter. It's especially favored because of the soft layer of needles from the pine trees. The majority of the chickens' day is spent in one of these places or going to and from them.

Still, every time I'm coming up my driveway there are a few standing in the middle of it, either on their way to a favorite place or picking up grit necessary for their digestion. Now, one would think when they see a large vehicle barreling towards them, they would quickly move to one side or another. But they don't. One would think they have blinders on or perhaps they panic and are thus unable to realize there are two places on either side that provide safety from this large looming truck that comes up the driveway (all the time). Regardless of this, they still run frantically in front of the truck as fast as their chicken legs will carry them.

Of course, I would never run them over (though I'm definitely tempted sometimes) but they obviously don't understand this. And for whatever reason they simply aren't capable of taking care of their own safety. But then, they've never been independent. With the exception of the time the hens spend laying eggs, they spend their days happily hunting and pecking without a care in the world. Their needs are entirely taken care of: food, shelter, fresh water. The one thing they don't realize, of course (with the exception of the ones that are pets) when they outlive their usefulness, when the hens aren't providing enough eggs to justify their feed, they're shot in the head, butchered and eaten.

Now, because I enjoy chickens and feel strongly about treating them with compassion & allowing them to free range, they have very good lives. But they could have ended up in a place where they're locked in a cage or a small yard everyday and roosters are usually culled from the flock unless it's a breeding farm. Being completely dependent on someone means they are completely at the benevolence of their owner. I understand why my chickens accept this, they know nothing else and have brains the size of a walnut. Thus, they're incapable of seeing a life beyond one of dependence. Why a free, thinking human being would want choose such a life, I'll never understand.
