Hackers Set Grocery Stores Ablaze With Remote Freezer Attacks

Hackers took control of refrigeration systems at hundreds of French grocery stores Sunday night, cranking the heat up to 122 degrees Fahrenheit, spoiling food, and reportedly sparking fires at several stores.

The attack targeted refrigeration systems made by Danish manufacturer Danfoss, hijacking software that lets retailers remotely manage their refrigerators and freezers. The systems normally undergo a short defrost cycle, but the hackers forced them to stay in that mode for several hours.

Managers arriving Monday at French grocery stores were met with a wave of hot air from the freezers, and several reported small fires, according to the BBC. Two supermarkets in eastern France alone reported about $302,000 in combined losses, according to French media reports.

Hackers managed to overheat the refrigerator spoiling food. Lots of good gone. This sounds like terrorism.

As best I can tell without following the mess, the current Frogistani riots started, for a day or two(?), with actual student protests of actual bad educational facility conditions, but leftists and Muslims of the radical flavor coopted their protest and went full riot. This sabotage is probably related to that.

Regardless of the who and why, I hope Kroger, Safeway, et al are paying attention.

Sure makes all those 'Smart Appliances' we're being sold seem like a great life upgrade, doesn't it...  :fuelfire:

I wonder how many Americans STILL leave the home wireless networks unsecured. I think it's rare here in Silicon Valley, with a large population of technoid life-forms, but elsewhere?

I wonder if Frogistani store left the freezers' factory default PW unchanged ... or they were just unsecured.
