Trump Secures Permanent Military Foothold in Greenland Deal

President Donald Trump announced Friday that the United States and Denmark have reached an agreement allowing an expanded and permanent American military presence in Greenland. The agreement will  strengthen U.S. security interests in the strategically important Arctic territory.

“The United States will FOREVER have the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland,” Trump wrote on social media. He said the U.S. would begin developing a large military presence in appropriate areas of the island while working with Greenlanders on development and construction.

Denmark and Greenland confirmed the agreement is expected to be signed during the United Nations General Assembly next week.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the agreement would strengthen the security of Greenland, Denmark, the United States and the Western alliance. Greenland leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen said the deal recognizes Greenland’s interests and role in international cooperation.

Under the agreement, the U.S. will maintain a permanent military presence even if Greenland eventually becomes independent. The arrangement also allows for additional American bases and prohibits non-NATO countries, including China and Russia, from establishing bases or making investments deemed threatening to U.S. security.

Some Proggie-MSM-folk are claiming that Trump didn't get what he wanted, for Greenland to be US territory. In the real world, Trump got exactly what he wanted: "perpetual" US access for any US bases deemed necessary; Russia and China permanently banned from Greenland.

Between existing bases in Alaska and soon coming bases in Greenland, the US will have the necessary early warning, should Putin or Xi or Kim III fires missiles. Having early warning bases in Alaska and Greenland may also reduce early warning bases in Syrupia from essential to nice-to-have or at least allow closing some. I wonder whether the blusterers in Ottawa have figured out that latter part.
