SAN FRANCISCO -- U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell has suspended his campaign for California governor following sexual assault allegations, announcing the decision Sunday as scrutiny intensified around the Democratic primary race.

In a statement, Swalwell said he would step aside to address the claims.

"To my family, staff, friends, and supporters, I am deeply sorry for mistakes in judgment I've made in my past. I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made - but that's my fight, not a campaign's."

What did they know about Eric Swalwell? It was an open secret.

Swalwell ripped for changing his tune on how sexual assault victims 'deserve to be heard'

California gubernatorial candidate Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., is facing backlash on social media after it was reported that his lawyer was sending cease and desist letters to Swalwell's accusers a day before multiple bombshell allegations were published Friday.

Swalwell, who once called on lawmakers to hear out women raising allegations against Supreme Court Justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh during his 2018 confirmation hearings and said they "deserve to be heard," is now being slammed for hypocrisy.

"I saw continued demeaning of victims of sexual assault, people who deserve to be heard, people who deserve their allegations to be investigated and a president who wants to rush this through," Swalwell said in an interview with MSNBC at the time.

"And, so, for Brett Kavanaugh’s sake, if he is innocent, I hope tomorrow he opens his statement and says, ‘You know what? Bring in all the victims, all of them to be questioned.’ That will clear his name if he is indeed innocent."

Eric Swalwell led a campaign against Brett Kavanaugh in 2018. It came back to haunt Swalwell.

'The View' co-host claims she personally witnessed troubling behavior from Swalwell

"The View" co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin claimed on Wednesday that she was privately disturbed by allegedly seeing California Rep. Eric Swalwell "overserved" with alcohol at an event.

Swalwell has ended his campaign for California governor and resigned from Congress after he was accused of sexual assault, as well as multiple reports alleging other misconduct with women. He has acknowledged "mistakes in judgment" but claimed the assault allegations against him are false.

Co-host Whoopi Goldberg noted that Arizona Sen. Ruben Gallego, one of Swalwell's closest friends and allies, "admitted there were rumors about Swalwell’s flirtatious behavior for years."

"Eric Swalwell lied to all of us," Gallego said at an impromptu press conference in his office earlier this week. "He lied to the most powerful people in this country, and they trusted him. They trusted him with some of the most sensitive spots in our government, whether it was on Judiciary Committee, Intel Committee, impeaching Donald Trump."

People saw what Eric Swalwell was up to. The View got some explaining to do.

Eric Swalwell led a campaign against Brett Kavanaugh in 2018. It came back to haunt Swalwell.

Swillwell also demanded the release of the Epstein files, https://www.foxnews.com/politics/kash-patel-calls-bullst-swalwell-heated-exchange-over-epstein-files . Swillwell imagined that his protection made him invulnerable to consequences for his actions. Questions like these still need answers:

* Who else in Congress (regardless of D, R, or I)?

* Who knew, how much, and for how long?

Sadly, because Ds are all but certainly uninterested (or interested in obstructing), Rs will be asking those questions, if anyone does, and the Dem-shill MSM will portray it as a partisan witch-hunt.
