Police in West Bloomfield, Michigan, have rushed to the Temple Israel synagogue, where reports of an active shooter now also include a fire inside the building. A car reportedly crashed into the building first, followed by reports of gunfire. As usual, police are not sharing too much about what has happened, but are warning people to stay away.

Update: CBS News reports from police communication that the shooter is down, and armed security took him down. The scene is still locked down while the FBI and police ensure that no other shooter is involved. No word on the fire yet.

Update: Fox News also hears that the suspect is dead, and that armed security employed by the synagogue shot the suspect after he rammed a truck into the building:

At this point, it seems unclear whether the armed security guards engaged the attacker after (s)he opened fire or before (s)he could.

The suspect, who is believed to have had a rifle, died after a shootout with security, according to a senior federal law enforcement official briefed on the investigation.

Nobody inside the synagogue was hurt and all children are accounted for, Bouchard said.

The only injury was to a security guard hit by the suspect's truck; the guard was “knocked unconscious” but is expected to be OK, the sheriff said.

According to the sources, the driver was seen steering around security bollards, and caused a fire when colliding the vehicle into the building's front doors.

The sheriff said the suspect drove his truck into the building and down the hall.

The truck is being searched for explosives, the sheriff said.

The two big bits of news here are that nobody was hurt (other than the security guard and the attacker) and that this was a very deliberate attack. Identity, motives, no mention, unsurprisingly given how little time has passed since the actual incident.

Vehicle in Michigan synagogue attack registered to Dearborn man born in Lebanon: sources

The vehicle used in Thursday’s attack at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan, is registered to a naturalized U.S. citizen from Lebanon who lives in Dearborn, according to three law enforcement sources who spoke to Fox News.

Authorities cautioned that investigators can only confirm the vehicle registration at this time, noting the suspect’s body was badly burned.

Law enforcement officials are still working to determine whether the individual who died at the scene matches the name tied to the vehicle registration.

But if there is an attack on a synagogue or an assailant is caught on video screaming, ‘Allahu Akbar,’ talking heads say, ‘Let’s not jump to any conclusions or speculate on motive!’ We saw that play out on Thursday as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali drove his truck into a Michigan synagogue, then exchanged gunfire with security before being fatally shot. Was he there to get a cup of sugar for a baking project, or was he an Islamist who wanted to murder Jews?

  Gee! The dude drove to a Jewish temple, not a Kroger or Lowe's, threaded a path through the security bollards, rammed through a glass door/window, and drove down the hall, injuring a security guard somewhere along the way. I do not think he was there for a BOGO sale on beer and Frito! The guy targeted Jews. Whatever his "reason", he hated Jews!

How many MSM outlets, possibly excepting Fox News and the NYP, have pointed out the hoplophobics nightmare in the room? That the temple's security people prevented a massacre that would have happened while the police were still minutes away? I'm not criticizing the local PD, just pointing out that having trained people on the spot can save lives.

It's sad, but absolutely reality, that churches and synagogues/temples need to have on-site security people who can respond to potential deadly force with deadly force.

The FBI's Detroit field office trained leadership and staff at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, in how to stop an active shooter in January, just weeks before a driver rammed his vehicle into the Jewish temple.

"FBI Detroit led an Active Shooter Attack Prevention and Preparedness training for the clergy and staff of Temple Israel in West Bloomfield," the field office posted on X. "The FBI course combines lessons learned from years of research and employs scenario-based exercises to help participants practice the decision-making process of the Run, Hide, Fight principles and take necessary actions for survival. We appreciate them for having us."

I have not seen whether the security people were from a security company or were congregation members. Either way, they were not stereotypical rent-a-cops.

Video: Attack at San Jose’s Santana Row investigated as possible hate crime

SAN JOSE, Calif. - San Jose police are investigating an attack at Santana Row over the weekend as a possible hate crime after victims reported that suspects hurled antisemitic remarks during the assault.

Jewish Silicon Valley CEO Daniel Klein said the victims were Israeli-American men and were speaking Hebrew when they were beaten.

"While they were waiting for their table, three people came up to them out of nowhere and knocked one of the victims out cold and then three of them jumped on top of the other victim," Klein said.

Dig deeper: KTVU has learned that one of the victims in this case has been the victim of a hate crime before.

The victim owns an HVAC company here in San Jose where his company vans were painted with swastikas in August of last year.

San Jose police were also called to investigate last year's case, but as of now there is no known link between last year's vandalism and the incident at Santana Row.

Ummmmm ... how many here could distinguish Hebrew from Polish or Kazakh or random language? That the attackers recognized the language evidences the attackers' likely ME origins.
