Lessons on the Economy from the NFL
« on: September 11, 2008, 10:26:53 PM »
As someone who grew up in the bay area, and attended 49er games (We sent off the coupons from the Christopher Milk half gallon cartons and received free nosebleed seats) at Kezar Stadium, where you needed a rain coat on clear days because of the seagulls, I knew that one day the 49ers would be great. I lived in Southern Cal in the '80s when the 49ers never lost in Anaheim. It was a good time to be a 49er fan. Nowadays things are different, and I am going to sing the same song Dixie. Willie Brown instituted a policy in San Francisco when he was mayor that basically said that if you do business with or in the City, you must have domestic partner benefits. I am not sure of the specifics of when it happened, but from the way the 49ers have been playing, it was probably about six years ago. I think the Raiders decided to follow suit, and they are feeling the effect also. Can you tell that not having any + numbers doesn't really bother me? Aside from the dpb issue, I would argue that the local economy affects how professional teams do. If the local economy is in a major downturn, then generally speaking the professional sports teams are down also. This is not a hard and fast rule. It is an observation I have made over time. I wonder if I can get to 100 minuses before I get a plus on my profile. Walmart and Exxon Mobil are the Number one and two companies in the US mainly due to the fact that they do not offer dpb. They are the most disliked companies because there is a concerted PR campaign by groups that disagree with their policy.

I had one of those sensitivity sessions where they talked about domestic partnerships at my company I had an interesting exchange with the corporate rep.  The primary requirement, according to the rep, was that you had to be in a "committed and loving relationship".  This is roughly how it went, and I got witnesses that could say so.

ME: So, I my girlfriend will be covered under this policy, right?
REP: No.
ME: Why not?
REP: Because you can provide the benefit by marrying her.
ME: Isn't that discrimination?
REP: What do you mean?
ME: If my girlfriend isn't covered how can you cover some other dudes boyfriend, the relationships are equally without paperwork.
REP: I don't know I'll get back to you. (brushoff line)
ME: So, will this cover my dog?
REP: (deer in headlights look) What?
ME: According to the way this policy is written, I have a committed and loving relationship with my dog, is he covered?

About that point I was ushered out of the meeting as it had descended into howls of laughter and I was escorted out.  I haven't been invited to sensitivity training since then.   I wonder why.

Paragraphs are our friends.

I'll check back when you reformat.

So the economy continues to have major trouble; I have a hypothesis that I would argue is the key to the failings, and you want paragraphs? I kinda ramble late at night, but my points do get across.

I tried to copy some of the material from the Lehman Brothers website with regard to dpb, but it was in pdf format, and there were errors. So if anyone is interested, go to the lehman bros website, click on careers and search for domestic partners. Lehman Bros were very much into the practice, as was Freddie and Fannie. It will be the common thread throughout. I just hope that George B. got the email I sent him and is doing something about it.

ps To stay with the subject, I am fairly certain that the State of Washington instituted dpb throughout the state, so the Seattle Seahawks and the Mariners will be in the same boat as the 49ers and the Giants.
