Of Course Americans are BROKE

It's been an ongoing Republicant project.

FDR's concept of the minimum wage was to establish a "living wage" that protected workers from exploitation and increased their purchasing power to stimulate the economy. He believed businesses paying less than a decent wage had no right to exist and that the minimum wage should be enough for a "decent living," not just bare subsistence. This led to the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938.

Check the record: the minimum wage was raised every single year to keep up with the cost of living.

That is, until 1980, when it was frozen for nine years.

The 1990 increase didn't keep up.
Second unprecedented minimum wage FREEZE 10 years during Clinton/Bush.
Third unprecedented minimum wage FROZEN since 2009!

2009. The minimum wage has now been frozen SIXTEEN years.

Now when you consider the transfer of wealth to employers and corporations for a total of 35 years of people not being paid a living wage, of course CEOs are rich. Not to mention raising the cost of every item households depend on.

I guess my thought process is different than those “people” on the left. In the mid-80s, when I started college, I quickly ran out of money so, not wanting to be a financial burden on my parents, I got a job working during the day and took classes at night. The first job that I could find was moving and setting up house trailers. To this day, I don’t know how much I was making per hour. I just knew that they had a job opening and that I needed a job AND, most importantly, getting any amount per hour was better than the $0 per hour than I was getting without a job.

After a few months of that, I got a job that was a temporary/seasonal job with a large company. When I did that interview, since it was such a large company, I did ask the supervisor who was interviewing me how much the job paid per hour. He said that he didn’t know and asked if it mattered. I told him “no”, and he told me to be there the next morning to go to work. I worked there for about 2 months, and then the job ran out. If I remember correctly, based on what was shown on my check stub, that job paid about $7.50 per hour.

After that, in the latter part of 1986, I quickly got a job with a small company. I didn’t ask about that pay, but it turned out to be $3.50 per hour which was a little over the minimum wage. I didn’t complain or scream “living wage” or pout. Instead, I worked my behind off to show the owner that I was a valuable employee who deserved more money. Within a few years, I was making $17 per hour with insurance and a company truck. That may not sound like a lot now, but in my little rural area, at that time, it was pretty good money.

I say all of that to say this... I never expected the government to demand anyone to pay me a certain wage. I just wanted the government to stay out of the way so jobs would be available so that I could show my worth and, if the situation required it, look for the next job opening.

The minimum wage is a starting point and what you make after that us dependent on your knowledge, drive and ability.  If you are still making the minimum wage when you retire then you  have nobody to blame but yourself.

That is, until 1980, when it was frozen for nine years.

In real life, https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/STTMINWGFG , https://www.infoplease.com/business/labor/annual-federal-minimum-wage-rates-1955-2021 , and https://www.cnn.com/interactive/2019/business/us-minimum-wage-by-year/index.html , the minimum wage stayed the same:

* From 1939 to 1944 (FDR)

* From 1950 to 1955 (Truman and Eisenhower)

* From 1956 to 1961 (Eisenhower)

* From 1961 to 1963 (JFK)

* From 1963 to 1967 (LBJ)

* From 1968 to 1976 (LBJ, Nixon, and Ford)

* From 1981 to 1991

* From 1992 to 1997 (5 years of Clinton)

* From 1998 to 2008 (3 years of Clinton)

* From 2010 to the present (7 years of Obama)

Whether Mr.Bee lied or ignorantly parroted someone else's lie, the Federal minimum wage did not increase every year until Reagan. It didn't even increase every year under FDR! Reagan was far from the first or only President during whose administration the Federal minimum wage stayed the same for 2 or more years.

Also in real life, the Federal minimum wage is set by Congress, not by the President. During how many of those "frozen" (tendentious word choice) years did the Dems control Congress?

Stoooopid Question time, did any DU-member dare fact-check Mr.Bee's annual increase claim or ((Horrors!) point out that Congress set the Federal minimum wage?

The real life minimum wage has never changed. It has always been zero. If the amount you demand for labor is less than the economic value of your output then you will not have a job.

Speaking of Mr.Bee's lies, it would be very :popcorn: :popcorn: :popcorn: to hear his explanation of how LIEden and OhBummer! not increasing the Federal minimum wage since 2010 was OK and did not make Americans "BROKE", but now Americans are after just 9 1/2 months of Trump.

Minimum wage is a starting point and infinitely fair, you doofus. Unless you're completely incompetent and/or a Democrat, a person doesn't stay at or anywhere near the minimum wage for 1, 3, 5, 10, or 30 years.

Back when mammoths roamed the earth and our school cafeteria was serving the last of the frozen dinoburgers, minimum wage jobs were mainly high school students getting their first work experience and college students doing likewise to help pay for college.

Dems and their MSM-shills waved their magic partisan wands and now minimum wage jobs are supposed to suffice to support a family in the most expensive places in the US (e.g. SF or Silicon Valley).

Claiming Republicans are trying to make Americans broke, but also pointing out minimum wage freezes during Democratic administrations?

That's an embarrassing self-own, even by DU standards.

As I posted above, either Mr.Bee lied or parroted someone else's lies. And of course, facts DU-Denizens don't want to hear or be heard are Reich-Wing.

Unsurprisingly, not one DUmmie bothered to fact-check Mr.Bee's claim that "the minimum wage was raised every single year".

They don’t understand the meaning of minimum, when you have zero skills and providing a minimum amount of service to a company, then you will make a minimum wage I think that’s pretty simple. :thatsright: :mental:

And when the government-imposed minimum exceeds the value of the service such a worker can perform, businesses will find alternatives the eliminate such jobs. Call it heartless or cruel or whatever, businesses are not charities, and business owners don't have magic money-printing machines in the rectums. An unprofitable business will go out of business sooner or later.

Cities that passed feel-good $15 minimum wage levels a decade or so ago saw many businesses close or move elsewhere. Those arbitrarily high minimum wages killed many restaurants. Some restaurants used technology to reduce their workforce. Those nice payment terminals did not come into use a decade because they look cool. They reduce the number of server-hours a restaurant needs. The Sichuan Noodle restaurant I went to yesterday used an app to take customer orders. Again that isn't to be cool, nor to reduce errors (though it does that), it reduces the number of server-hours a restaurant needs.

Dunnienomics is when they think that a basic job should start out at 40K a year to just flip burgers and works as s car wash attendant.

It's a working model. Cal's fast food minimum wage put 18,000 people out of work. That makes for more people reliant on government largesse and more prone to vote D.
