This is my 10th year teaching, all of them here in the same district in Texas. There has always been a line in our contract about social media use that says your personal accounts can be used against you, it used to say "don't post anything that may embarrass the district" the current version mentions court rulings about teacher's speech disrupting school operations, asks staff to reflect the same standards as face to face communication and consider the appropriateness of photos and posts.
The government doesn't get to limit speech, but employers can choose who represents them, and how they want to be represented. Nike and the NFL decided not to drop Kaepernick when he started his stuff, cause they were ok with him representing them. I'll wager there are school admins out there, and probably communities who are ok with teachers celebrating Kirk's murder representing them. I'm sure there are companies who are ok with people who are celebrating Kirk's murder representing them as well, that one is easier to deal with, cause we have a free market economy, don't do business with them. Schools are a bit harder cause it's not a free market right now, but there's school board elections to run for and get involved in.
BTW, lurkers, none of this is "cancelling". Employees can get other jobs, businesses can choose to continue their practices if they wish to risk profits. "Cancelling" is demanding people be removed from platforms instead of countering their ideas and statements, "cancelling" is threatening violence if people are given opportunities to speak or perform at venues. Working through the systems, both the marketplace and the marketplace of ideas, is how the people are supposed to defend, support, spread and filter out ideologies.
