Trans Violence Is a Real Thing, and It Is Out of Control

A 32-year-old transgender woman stabbed a man to death at an Avalon Park gas station after he allegedly made comments about her gender, prosecutors said, as her spouse and 7-year-old son looked on. Surveillance video allegedly showed Kelly Day stabbing 50-year-old Larry Young 13 times, pausing once to adjust her grip on the knife.

Prosecutors said Day had been mocked by unidentified people for using a women’s restroom on the evening of October 7. She later told her spouse she was “tired of all these bullies making comments about her gender,” according to the detention filing. About 7:30 p.m., while Day, her spouse, and their 7-year-old son were walking along the 1400 block of West 87th Street, Young approached and began commenting on Day’s gender, prosecutors said.

Day became “extremely angry” and began arguing with Young as her spouse tried to pull her away, but she refused to leave. Young pushed Day with his hands and walked away, crossing to the north side of the street toward a gas station.
