This is interesting. I use Apple products and only know ONE conservative that uses them. My repub sisters absolutely refuse to use them because Gore is on Apple's board. Limbaugh has been using Apple for years. When DU polls are done on the subject, there seems to be a larger percentage of Apple users here compared to the general public.

Elizabeth Montalbano, IDG News Service Thu Jan 17, 4:20 PM ET

People who prefer Apple's Macintosh computers over PCs have long been considered to be on the artsy, hip end of the personality spectrum-- and now a study proves that "Mac people" indeed are more liberal and open-minded than average folks.

According to Mindset Media, people who purchase Macs fall into what the branding company calls the "Openness 5" personality category-- which means they are more liberal, less modest and more assured of their own superiority than the population at large. Mindset Media helps companies with strong brands develop ads targeted to people based on personality traits or people's "mindsets," and does research to that effect.

So-called Openness 5 types tend to seek rich, varied and novel experiences, according to the company, and believe that imagination and intellectual curiosity are as important to life as more rational or pragmatic endeavors. They also are receptive to their own inner feelings and may experience life with more emotional intensity.

The company uses Nielsen Online's panel for the Mac mindset study, the results of which are based on responses from 7,500 participants.

It's no great secret that Macs have always been popular with creative types-- the computers have been the mainstay of creative agencies and video- and sound-editing houses for years. This probably has as much to do with the fact that Apple and partners have delivered popular software for graphic and multimedia designers and artists as it does with the contemporary industrial design Macs have long reflected.

well, this just proves how wrong most polls are..

my husband works for MS and we have not one, not two but three Macs in this house...

he is presently coveting that "Air" thin notebook that just came out as well...

but our main computer in our office with all the important stuff on it, is a PC.

Isn't the Apple the computer people first learn on?

And then they graduate to IBM-level computers?

Everybody I know, including myself of course, first learned computers on the Apple, and then we moved up.

Tell a Mac user that you have a PC and you'll find out quickly how "open minded" they are. Macs are the only computer I see that comes with a political ideology; Liberalism. Why else would they tout a study that shows them as more Liberal and Open Minded?
It's all about them.

For me PC's are better just because there is a lot more software available for them.

Actually, there are two hard-core conservatives in my office, one is a retired LT CDR and the other a retired SFC. Both are Mac-lovers.

I have a friend who is a graphic artist(he does those Playbill covers) and he uses a Mac for work and hates the damn thing. It is not what he uses at home. I don't know how I'd classify him. I think he's a conservative at heart coming from a military family and knowing him as I have for 25 or so years, but because of his occupation and where he 'plays' one would probably assume he is liberal.

All of my personal computers are PC's.
However, we do use a stack of Apple G5 XServes for R&D at work.  Underneath the mostly worthless glitz that is Tiger or Leopard, is a really NICE version of BSD Unix.  I use these machines all the time, and I've never even so much as looked at the overlying OS, but the Unix layer is top notch.

years ago, I did (among other things) sys admin on a sun SPARC 10 running solaris & helios ethershare and supporting about 85 macs all slinging graphics -- most of which were huge.  we were locked in with a 3rd party app, and the vendor never got beyond a ridiculously old version of solaris.  that freaking machine was the bane of my existence.  I hope that whoever first had the idea of putting mac graphics people on a unix platform burns in hell.

hey i already said that, like three times!

people always act shocked like a computer guy is going to turn his nose up at better graphics and sleekness... riiight. hardware is hardware... the coolest stuff is what people use. i personally think PCs are more stable, as does the Softie in my home, but that doesnt mean he wont use a Mac if the job calls for it.

as for the companies.. I assume BillG is a liberal but quite a lot of the execs and top tier management is robustly conservative. It's not really talked about much, but from what I see and hear, its definitely conservative.

Apple is proud of its fierce liberalness... but the odds are, someone there is a conservative... its just never, ever discussed.

Why this insistence to label an org either one way or the other? What does it matter?

I used Amigas for several generations including all sorts of hardware mods and box-bashing, as well as doing some simple programming on them.  Incredible stuff for the time and a combination of GUI and CLI that kicked Mac's ass let alone the PC's ("Mac, the machine for people who can't read or type").  But with Windoze 95, economies of scale, and the advantages of open architecture boxes, when CBM went tits-up I knew I was never going to go with a proprietary-architecture system again, it's just not worth the extra cost and limited seftware options anymore.

I use a mac powerbook at home - work supplies HP laptops - and enjoy using the Mac a lot.  I will most likely stay with the platform for home use. The primary reason for the switch to mac was at the time it was one of the fastest 12" laptops around and was also pretty light.  Both very important to me because we were going 100% wireless nearly 4 years ago (home network & printing-why have a laptop if you have to plug in your printer?) and the PC crowd didn't seem to have much to offer in the "plug&play" wireless market.
