You know what, f*ck Capitalism...

In my 20+ years as a working man, all I've ever observed among myself and my peers, is how our economy finds ways to screw us over.

From one of my earliest jobs at Wal-Mart in the 1990s where I had to sit through anti-union propaganda while they lauded their much touted "open door" policy, but ****, if you even associate with a union, your fired, while I was being paid barely above minimum wage. To today, at a different retailer, where I had to sit through anti-union propaganda ****ing again, listening to the same tired arguments as 20 years ago, while they pay me barely above what isn't even inflation adjusted minimum wage, and part time at that(don't want to pay benefits after all).

I'm actually lucky, my full time job provides benefits, the latest trend seems to be for companies to not hire full time so they don't have to provide benefits. Been there 10 years and I'm literally afraid to try to change jobs, I'm healthy right now, but that could change tomorrow, and I don't know if I can risk 90 days with no benefits and that's being lucky, or being charged and arm and a leg on the market in my state, while having to get not one job, but two more to make up for the lack of hours a part time job provides. I already work 65+ hours a week, not much wiggle room for anything. Hell, I haven't had a proper day off in 3+ months.

How about another great example of our capitalistic system, a former job where I was hired, through temp firm, to work at a plastics factory where, just a month before, they had regular employees, but laid them all off to hire temp worker at a fraction of the wages they paid those full time employees. Yes, I was damn near a ****ing scab, and hated myself for it, luckily, or unluckily, within months I got injured on the job but couldn't prove it to their satisfaction, so I was forced to quit and for a while there racked up thousands of dollars in medical bills. This was well before Obamacare, and in my state, if you don't have kids, forget getting Medicaid.

On paper, between the incomes of me and my fiancee, we are "middle class" so much so that I actually owe the government money for taxes for the first time in my life this year(Thanks ****ing Trump). But hell, I can't afford to pay that money, but I'm going to have to do so anyways, somehow, anyone know what's cheaper to eat than Ramen, because I had that last night, and it looks like tonight is another night of Ramen.

But if the car needs fixing, or we have yet another medical emergency, then we are screwed. Not like I'm unique in this regard, but for ****'s sake, I'm literally taking daily anxiety medications so I don't ****ing break down every night over my ****ing finances.

And people are like "Show me a successful Socialist country/society" Mother****ers, show me a success Capitalistic one.

I can honestly say I don't know a single person who has been in the workforce for 20+ years in this position, without also knowing that person as a loser in one way or another.  Whether it be spending addiction, drugs/alcohol, lazy ... etc.

Anyone with any drive whatsoever, will not be making minimum wage more than a couple of years.  It's just a fact.

Maybe someone can find the reference about a reporter who made himself homeless to see how well he could cope.  By just keeping himself clean and working diligently he had a fast food clerk job inside a few weeks and was assistant manager or something and had an apartment purely on his work wages inside of 6 months.

I agree anyone who is working a minimum wage job after 20+ years is a born loser.  Probably tatted to high heaven and has earlobe rings and eyebrow piercings, etc.  Lazy and good for nothing.  After 20 years I was well into the 6 figure a year mark.

True :bouncy: time ... about three years ago my employer of 7 year let us all know the ~18 month process of shutting down the division had begun. Our jobs would be moved to PA and SoCal, mine to the latter. We were offered very substantial $$ incentives to stay to the end and to move (two separate incentives). I was already in my 60s, and had significant reasons to wish not to move to Orange County. Within three months of starting my job search I was starting at my new, better, job. So if Humanist_Activist has been in the job market that long and really is afraid to change jobs, he's chosen a poor career field and/or has not been diligent enough as a student and worker to make himself valuable to employers. Especially in the current job market where employers have long-term openings they can't fill for lack of skilled people. My guess, if this part of the :bouncy: isn't fiction, is the latter, plus a bad on-the-job attitude.

It’s a shame he wasn’t ‘dropped’ similarly to an NFL TD-scorer spiking that football, as whatever official raises his arms for the score.

You would think that after 20 years he would know how to manage his money but he'd rather blame capitalism than his poor financial skills.
Man’s greatness is so obvious that it can even be deduced from his wretchedness, for what is nature in animals we call wretchedness in man, thus recognizing that, if his nature is today like that of the animals, he must have fallen from some better state which was once his own.

And he is a man of "substance". As in chin-neck-shoulders merger in progress.

Having looked over his "resume'":

He has a high school education. Since July 2000 just 2 of his 7 jobs lasted more than a year. There are 2 gaps of 19 months or more. Few of his jobs had a career path, and of those he's only stayed at one more than a year.

Capitalism hasn't failed him, he has failed himself, even sabotaged himself, by getting no education beyond high school, job-hopping (or getting canned), and two employment gaps that if not explained would be red flags to a prospective employer.

I get that trying to get education after entering the full-time job market is not easy, but take responsibility for not having attempted to surmount that obstacle. Don't blame it on others or society, or capitalism!

I completely agree with you that he's sabotaged himself, but the education part can go either way.  I don't have any college.  I was raised poor, taught myself to weld after getting some basic skills in a vo-tech class offered at my small rural high school.  I have worked hard and I'm a very driven individual and I moved up in just about anything I set out to do.

I guess what I'm saying is, education is not the be all to end all when it comes to being successful.  It helps some and hinders others.  I do quite well financially, and none of it was given to me.  Education comes in all forms and OJT is one of the best educations I've ever had if you view it as an opportunity and not 'The Man' just trying to pay you too little compared to others who have knowledge in the field you're working in.  All these losers get pissed when they don't get to start at the top and move up from there.  I think that's their biggest downfall.

Just my opinion.

I was using "get an education" broadly, whether college, a vo-tech, a union trade school, or auto-didact. I regard a good plumber, carpenter, etc. as being as educated as I am in my technoid life form career. And often more useful.

Or Humanist_Activist could simply have learned at his janitorial jobs all necessary to do a really good job at cleaning offices - the what, the how, and the tools - and started his own business. That would be hard work, obviously, and success not instantaneous, but he's in/near a major US city where he could find potential customers.

I kind of figured that's what you meant, but was just clarifying.  Yes sir, you can be successful in anything if you have just a little drive and are at least above room temperature in the IQ department.  Even the janitor can learn to be the maintenance man, who can learn to be an HVAC guy, who can start his own HVAC/Electrical/Controls business.

I've a good deal of stupid and short-sighted manglement, just not so stupid as to lay off every experienced production worker and replacing them with untrained people.
