- Everyone who won American Idol
- Every disco band
- All white rappers but Eminem
- Every "boy band"
- Madona

(is that cheating?)

I could tolerate the american idol winners if I could erase weird al yankovic.

I was a really big Weird "Al" fan in his hey-day. I think I was 10. Nowdays, I could live without him.
"When you see that trading is done, not by consent, but by compulsion - when you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing - when you see that money is flowing to those who deal, not in goods, but in favors - when you see that men get richer by graft and by pull than by work, and your laws don't protect you against them, but protect them against you - when you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice - you may know that your society is doomed."

I watched a Biography channel thing on Weird Al the other night.  He really has been more important to pop music than we want to remember.  Al's a decent guy too.  He turns 50 next year.

The Cowsills (Jeezus, even the name conjures up bovine blech)

The Sex Pistols (lauded by the "piss stain" itself, that pile of cinder blocks in Cleveland thinly disguised as "The Rock n Roll Hall of Fame". Sid Vicious is rolling over in his grave

Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass (oh, God help me - this guy's so bad he had to form his own record company)

Bobby Goldsboro (dunno if he actually had a band behind him, but this guy should've been rendered speechless from birth)

Insane Clown Posse (the name says it all)

Madonna

Duran Duran: If it weren't for the birth of that accursed MTV, this band would never have gotten off the ground.

Boston: It's the same song. Again and again.

The Ramones: See the Boston entry.

The entire gangsta-rap genre, not only for the damage it has done to the cities, but to all those suburban, rhythmless, wealthy white kids who wear their pants around their thighs and their baseball caps askew.

God alone suffices.

Bob Dylan - as if anything that lazy pothead ever did could objectively qualify as "music" in the first place;

The Beatles - I'm sorry but as the child of a pair of Beatles-aholics, I don't see what the ****in' big deal was, and I'm tired of all the hype 30+ years after they became has beens;

Madonna - You are the weakest link - ya hose-beast! - GOODBYE!;

Let's see, I'm thinking Run DMC was damned near the head of the [c]rap genre (I could be wrong, but it's a valid target nonetheless)  - remove the head and kill the rest of the pathetic genre;

And last but by no means least, that Diana Ross wannabe, Michael Jackson - get the **** outa here, ya pervert!

I never was a crazed Beatles fan myself, but I do know something about that era.  The Beatles were responsible for turning popular music on its ear - in a good and positive way.

I was 9 years old when they arrived on the American scene via Ed Sullivan in 1964.  I was not impressed.  I carried a baseless bias against The Beatles until late in the decade.

Now I listen to their music with an opened mind and I'm amazed.  Their use of major and minor chords in vocal and rhythm harmonies alone is enough to put them in the Musical Genius Circle.

The Beatles' drug-fueled lack of musical inhibitions resulted in a spectacular period of creativity and musical exploration unmatched, especially today.  Their innovative energy gave permission to so many other artists to get outside the 4/4-time-in-a-formula-box and produce the most incredibly lasting works of musical art we still enjoy to this day.

Musically speaking, we owe a great deal of credit and appreciation to those four boys who called themselves The Beatles.   Popular music's library wouldn't be half of what is today if The Beatles hadn't come along when they did.

So, stick it in your Octopus's Garden   :tongue:

I read this a few weeks ago and found the analysis on "Eleanor Rigby" interesting:

Quote
Melody and Harmony
   The melody here is in the Dorian mode; that's the one with the minor third but Major sixth and seventh, and it's a relatively uncommon choice for the Beatles, over the long run.
   The harmonic resources are quite spare, with a very small number of chords actually used, and those that are used make for relatively weak and modally "plagal" establishment of the home key. Aside from the large drone-like air play given to the e-minor i chord, we have no more than VI (C) and iv (a); the Major IV chord (a nice modal touch in context of a minor key) is implied as a passing chord over the e drone.
  Arrangement
   The backing arrangement for small string ensemble is well crafted by someone who clearly understood the string quartet idiom. Though eight players are used, the writing is in essentially four parts where, except for brief flashes of solo playing, each is doubled for strength.

What all this means is that the Beatles didn't necessarily walk into the studio with all this laid out on paper. They doodled. And McCartney was a pretty good doodler.

The producer's role in this is actually light-years beyond most music producers today. These are the goons that have dollar signs in their eyes and have absolutely no concept of music beyond what they think sells.

I'd like to think that Blood, Sweat & Tears and Chicago had a good positive influence on music.

They did indeed, but not before or without The Beatles plowing the road.

Tiny Tim wasn't exactly a "band"...... (I'm not quite sure he was actually a "musician", either)

Lessee . . .

Vanilla Ice  (He's on "Ice, Ice, Baby" as a DJ somewhere--really!)
Any gangsta-type rapper  (Look into the thread for one of the reasons)
Rick Astley  (The whole "Rickrolled" thing--the New York Mets damn near had that happen to them)
Celine Dion  (My hearing won't go on!)
Any number of "hardcore" metal bands  (Screaming words at the top of your lungs is not singing)

As for those who might be on someone's list, but shouldn't (IMO) . . .

Bee Gees--those songs were, and still, hot.  Barry's falsetto is entertaining enough for me--and he didn't have to get castrated to be able to sing that high!
Bruce Springsteen--cannot stand his politics, love the music and the songwriting ability.  He's had more than a few hits where he wasn't singing the song; he wrote it, and gave it to whomever to record it.
Johnny Cash--if you don't have at least one Cash album, IMO, there's something wrong.

There's others, but I think that you get my drift.
"Timid men prefer the calm of despotism to the tempestuous sea of Liberty." - Thomas Jefferson
