Gross Overpopulation Is One Issue That Is Suicide For Any Politician To Address. We Are In Crisis.
It is a given our population uses more resources in a year than the earth can replenish. We are down the planets yearly creation of resources are used up by August. And we are at 7 billion an counting. There is no way that 9 billion people can live on this planet as projected.

We can already see the unequal distribution of resources with refugee and starvation problems. The growing portion of our ecosphere grows by the day. And global warming is boing to make everything worse. The only sure thing about this crisis is that if the human race does not address the problem the earth will. Mother nature has a way of taking care of things.

Either we do it or the Earth solves the problem for us.

20. A global law?

How does that work?

The problem isn’t in the US. Our birth rates are declining and if it wasn’t for immigration we would be losing population.

Are you proposing some sort of new colonialism where we go take over the developing world and impose our rules on them?

55. It's not such a problem in the western world because women are more educated and

have more options. You are right in stating that population stabilizes in advanced economies, but the empowerment of women is the reason why.

This is what needs to happen in developing nations. More education, employment, birth control and empowerment for females. As long as power is concentrated in the hands of men the population explosion will continue.

21. Blame science

I'm being serious here. Our life expectancy has doubled in the last 100 years. The argument of having less children will only result in an overburdened society where they are struggling to support the elderly, look at Japan for an example of this. If you really want to get rid of excess population the most logical way but the least moral solution is to forget all the scientific advancements we have made, no more insulin, cancer treatments, vaccinations, or triple bypass surgeries. Have a few major wars with Civil War era medical care. Go back to old farming techniques and starve out a good portion of the population. Or, you can just impose a maximum age and euthanize every one who survives to that age.

How did Alan Grayson say it?

How can this logic be disputed??

62. There are many great thought provoking ideas in this thread

There are solutions among the thinking. But what about the religious baby factories who could care less about logical reality. Their ideologies dictate their procreation activities where the quiver must be full, and damn the planet since only the afterlife matters and god is going to blow it to smithereens anyway.

The oligarchs using the extremists of the world already have their age old answer... cull humanity to a controllable few. I say cull the oligarchs so we can get on with rebuilding a civil society and returning to a natural planet where reason and reality prevail.

Workable answers seem so distant...

Logic and common sense seem ... SO DISTANT!  DU the final frontier.  Boldly going where no brain has gone before.

Should one a man of wisdom meet
who points out faults and gives reproof,
who lays a hidden treasure bare,
with such a sage should one consort.
Consorting so is one enriched
and never in decline.

LOL!
Seriously, though, the Masticating Nutsack wouldn't blame either of those groups for overpopulation: Rather, he'd blame it on who he blames all bad things on: Christians.

Fortunately for him, defacto7 picks up the slack for him and injects the religious hate- mongering/ atheist arrogance into the discussion.
Oh, and of course, we can't have that kind of discussion without one of them (In this case, roamer65) openly calling for a worldwide implementation of China's infamously brutal one- child policy.

The whole world could attend a full-blown Woodstock music festival within the area of the state of Delaware, the second smallest of US states.

Paul Ehrlich prophesied that there would be mass famines in the 1970s due to inability to produce enough food. We are now almost halfway to the 2070s and those mass famines have not happened. In fact, the world still produces so much food that the US government still pays farmers not to produce more food.

But if Nematode wants to take personal action to reduce his personal contribution to the "Gross Overpopulation", I won't object.

Could you live on a piece of land 32 feet on a side?  I could.

Assume a flat and featureless area the size of the State of Texas.

Texas (square miles): 261,797

Square mile in square feet: 27,878,400

Approximate population, H. sapiens (Planet Earth only):    7,000,000,000

Square feet of Texas per individual H. sapiens, divided equally: 1,043

Don't worry Nematode. A big correction is coming soon.
Man’s greatness is so obvious that it can even be deduced from his wretchedness, for what is nature in animals we call wretchedness in man, thus recognizing that, if his nature is today like that of the animals, he must have fallen from some better state which was once his own.

It's a real issue despite the pooh-poohing here.  Those millions in motion aren't fleeing just ISIS and its ilk, they are fleeing economies that can barely keep their ever-increasing populations alive, one bad year away from famine, and the political instability that marginal life breeds.  The political and economic fragility feed on each other, resulting in open conflict and bloodshed that results cascading failures in both the economic and political fronts.  Historically these have been regional issues alleviated to some degree by food aid from wealthier countries, but when the wealthy countries have less surplus and 'Regional problems' become continental problems, that's going to break down.

In the foreseeable future, we are going to have a choice between opening the borders and trying to feed the world for no return, with government control of resources to that one no-win 'Humanitarian' end on an ever-steeper treadmill (And screw those luxuries like nature reserves and rain forests), or pulling back behind deadly-force borders and letting the Third World collapse and die back to what it can actually support.  I personally think we won't be quite willing to do the first completely, all at once, and the second won't happen unless there is some precipitating global disaster like a big asteroid/comet impact or a major volcanic caldera explosion.  It'll be the first, but in a slow incremental way that'll take a hundred years to turn the U.S. into something like India is now.  By then you really wouldn't want to see what India becomes.

For my part, I'm not poo-pooing anything. Those crises are real, but they are created by government policies or failures of government to keep their countries to descend into anarchy.

The world produces plenty of food. To date and for the foreseeable future famines have been and will be government sabotaged production and government failures of distribution. That is entirely different from Malthus' 18th Century and Ehrlich's 20th Century prophecies of over-population doom.

The best thing that the world's smartest man in the history of the universe, Obama did while impersonating a president was hire Ehrlich as his science advisor. Hired a man that has never in his entire career and most likely his life ever, ever made a correct prediction.  That is what super geniuses like Obama and Ehrlich do. They get together and 69 each other over how smart they are. Those two are what leftists call smart. It is truly scary.

So, basically, once a region can't produce enough food for its people and lacks any other source of income to obtain it by trade - whether or not previous government decisions got them there, or they just populated over the carrying capacity of the land and their farming technology - only the largesse of other governments or NGOs with government financial support can save them from famine, since the 'Free market' won't benefit them as they have no value to trade.  That pretty much sets up political instability and cascading failures, and in the longer term the choice between the two unpalatable options for the wealthgier countries a few generations farther down the road.
