UnicornOnTheCob (1960 posts) July 30, 2018 at 9:59 am Even Libertarians Admit Medicare for All Would Save TrillionsBut the real game here for Mercatus is to bury the money-saving finding in the report’s tables while headlining the incomprehensibly large $32.6 trillion number in order to trick dim reporters into splashing that number everywhere and freaking out. This is a strategy that already appears to be working, as the Associated Press headline reads: “Study: ‘Medicare for all’ projected to cost $32.6 trillion.”Messaging strategy aside, there is room to quibble with Blahous’s positive findings. He assumes administrative costs will only drop from 13 percent to 6 percent for those currently privately insured. But, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation, Medicare’s administrative costs have consistently been below 2 percent. He assumes utilization of health services will increase by 11 percent, but aggregate health service utilization is ultimately dependent on the capacity to provide services, meaning utilization could hit a hard limit below the level he projects. But even if you take the report’s headline figures at face value, the picture it paints is that of an enormous bargain. We get to insure every single person in the country, virtually eliminate cost-sharing, and save everyone from the hell of constantly changing health insurance all while saving money. You would have to be a fool to pass that offer up. Bruenig is correct about the media reaction to the Koch funded study which is designed to paint single payer healthcare as impossibly expensive:CBS News: Study: “Medicare for all” plan touted by Bernie Sanders would cost $32.6 trillionThe Hill: Bernie Sanders’s ‘Medicare for all’ would cost $32.6 trillion: studyFox News: Bernie Sanders’ ‘Medicare for all’ bill estimated to cost $32.6T, new study saysBloomberg: ‘Medicare for All’ Would Cost $32.6 Trillion Over 10 Years, Study SaysMarket Watch: House Republican campaign chairman says government shutdown unlikely | Sanders’ ‘Medicare for all’ plan projected to cost more than $32 trillionThe Columbus Dispatch: Study: ‘Medicare for all’ projected to cost $32.6 trillionAxios: Bernie’s “Medicare for All” predicted to cost nearly $33 trillionNewsday: Study: ‘Medicare for all’ bill estimated at $32.6 trillionBoston Globe: There’s now a price tag for ‘Medicare for all’: $32.6 trillionABC News: Study: ‘Medicare for all’ projected to cost $32.6 trillion But you shouldn’t worry that two oil billionaires fund think tanks who exist to crank out studies that the media parrots to convince voters that they can’t afford to make sure everyone in the country has health care. You should be more worried about Russia than the fact that a right wing Supreme Court has decided that money is speech. And this isn’t just rabid right wingers and libertarians – it’s also the neoliberals. The Center for American Progress, who is funded by billionaires and undisclosed corporations is doing the same thing. The media was just as eager to tout their policy paper on Medicare Extra for All, which has the same goal as the Koch study – to kill single payer healthcare for all citizens.Los Angeles Times: Finally, a universal healthcare proposal that would work for everyoneNew York Magazine: Medicare for All Won’t Bring Medicare to AllCBS News: Liberal group rolls out Medicare Extra for All proposalChicago Tribune: Leading liberal policy group unveils ‘coverage for all’ planThe Hill: Center for American Progress’ health care plan does have real meritNew York Daily News: Leading liberal policy group unveils ‘coverage for all’ plan Which billionaire backed plan to kill single payer would you prefer the “real” news to cover?Bruenig points out, even while churning out propaganda, it’s impossible to refute that single payer is a better system than what we have now. That’s the dangerous conversation that’s not allowed to exist in “legitimate” media circles – not only does single payer cover everyone, it costs less.
If some report, or even the gov't, says it's going to cost $32.6 trillion over 10 years, count on it at least being $97.8 trillion without blinking an eye..
