Why are some high profile news organizations hiding behind a firewall?
Do they need money more badly than National Interest? What about our country that gave you the freedom to do what you do?

As we have seen systematically demonstrated, KGOP republicans & their evil-empire* russian comrades think INFORMATION is dangerous, and should be CONTROLLED. Thus, they are tickled pinko to aid and abet other forces bearing upon the monetization of the net.

But as an established pillar of our constitutional values and a prime element of balance of powers, it does seem incongruous that so much of their work is determined by their funding or lack thereof.

Should the press be run like a non-profit?

  Has DU-Fool "icymist" never bought a newspaper or news magazine? Never paid to subscribe to a newspaper or news magazine?

I don't do paywall subscriptions. There are more than enough good news sources that support themselves with just ads.

The Internet disrupted both the MSM's information oligopoly and newspapers' and magazines' subscriptions-plus-ads business model. Paywalls are attempts to turn back that business model clock, and I don't think it will succeed. What I think will replace the bloated national papers, magazines, and audio/video news divisions is local papers and affiliate stations networked together by the national networks and news aggregators like Drudge or PJMedia's Instapundit.

Our local newspaper has a paywall on their website if you are a non-subscriber to their physical paper. They do allow a certain number of free articles each month, but they include looking at an obituary the same as reading an article.

For the DUers who don't get it. Speech is free in that you can't be charged with a crime for exercising this right. However. the media you choose to use may have a price attached. A paper has to pay for the raw materials that are used to create the paper. They have to pay the salaries of writers and editors who provide content to print on the paper. They have to pay the cost of distribution so people can read the paper. Because of all these expenses, a paper needs to charge a particular amount to cover these costs. Because the total cost to produce the paper would make it unaffordable for the average person to buy it every day, they sell some space to advertisers to offset the production costs. This is where the real problems begin.
