A Visitor Popped in a while ago....
« on: March 07, 2017, 07:19:54 PM »
We have a visitor. Just dropped in. Looked a little hungry, so I fed him some raw hamburger. Ate about 4 tablespoons full. We'll keep him overnight in the garage and then Mrs. E and a neighbor will take him to the Mississippi Wildlife Rehabilitation Center tomorrow.

Is he hurt, or just cold. Maybe they could get him some glasses.

Seems perfectly healthy. Calm, no outward fear. I picked him up with my hands and he was a little wobbly, but he did okay and didn't bite.

The bird is mostly down -- still too young to fly; hasn't fledged yet. The Rehab Center will take him in and hopefully teach him how to hunt, then release him back to the wild.

How adorable!

I found an owl beside the road several years ago. It had been hit by a car and one of its wings looked broken. I got some heavy duty garden gloves, put the owl in my car, and took it to Oatland Island Wildlife Center in Savannah. They rehab wild animals there, too. I never found out if the owl was able to be released back into the wild; but I know they took good care of him.

That is awesome.
My dad raised a pair of them when I was a kid. They wouldn't eat anything unless it was pretty much still warm. He would shoot a rabbit every couple days out back and give to them. As they matured, he started leaving them outside and they would roost in a tree. After a couple of weeks, they stopped coming back. I have a picture around here somewhere and dad has them on his arm.
