Lee Morse had to be billed as "Miss Lee Morse" at the beginning of her career, so that people did not confuse her with a male singer.  She attempted to make a comeback in the early fifties, and had an even deeper voice.  She was all of five feet tall and under 100 pounds, too.

Earlier today I came across the term "Morris dancing" while reading a book about, of all things, the gypsies of Albania circa the mid-1990s.  I'd seen the words "Morris dancing" before, a long time ago in a book of American history circa 1820-1850, but never paid attention.

This time, I decided to look it up.  It's delightful.

Quote
While the earliest (15th-century) references place the Morris dance in a courtly setting, it appears that the dance became part of performances for the lower classes by the later 16th century; in 1600, the Shakespearean actor William Kempe Morris danced from London to Norwich, an event chronicled in his Nine Daies Wonder (1600).

Almost nothing is known about the folk dances of England prior to the mid-17th century. While it is possible to speculate on the transition of "Morris dancing" from the courtly to a rural setting, it may have acquired elements of pre-Elizabethan (medieval) folk dance, such proposals will always be based on an argument from silence as there is no direct record of what such elements would have looked like. In the Elizabethan period, there was significant cultural contact between Italy and England, and it has been suggested that much of what is now considered traditional English folk dance, and especially English country dance, is descended from Italian dances imported in the 16th century.

By the mid 17th century, the working peasantry took part in Morris dances, especially at Whitsun. The Puritan government of Oliver Cromwell, however, suppressed Whitsun Ales and other such festivities. When the crown was restored by Charles II, the springtime festivals were restored. In particular, Whitsun Ales came to be celebrated on Whitsunday (Pentecost), as the date coincided with the birthday of Charles II.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morris_dance

From the offerings on youtube--of which there's tons and tons--it appears to be mostly men, but here's an example of women dancing it:

Down here on the farm the weather gets messy
Laying around with nothin' to do
When you went away, you took my cow Bessie
I miss her darling, more than I miss you

You took off your leg, your wig and your eye glass
And you shoud've seen the look on my face
I wanted to kiss, I wanted to hug you
But you were scattered all over the place

 Where, where, are you tonight?
Why did you leave me here all alone?
 I searched the world over,
And thought I found true love.
 You met another and
 Phht! you were gone.

I know that you loved me, here's my way of knowing
The proofs hanging out right there on the line
When I see the snow and feel the wind blowing
Your nighties hugging them long johns of mine

The noises you made at our supper table
Your habits, my dear, were surely absurd
But how many times do I have to tell you
Soup is a dish to be seen and not heard

Where, oh where, are you tonight?
Why did you leave me here all alone?
 I searched the world over,
And thought I found true love.
 You met another and
 Phht! you were gone.

Remember you phoned me a-sobbin' and cryin'
The dog bit your maw, and drug her around
You said she looked pale and thought she was dying
 I said "Don't worry, I'll buy a new hound."

I had six kids and you had eleven
And we had a boy, and they grew like flowers
I wish you'd come back, without you ain't heaven
'Cause your kids and my kids are beatin' up ours

Where, oh where, are you tonight?
Why did you leave me here all alone?
 I searched the world over,
And thought I found true love.
 You met another and
 Phht! you were gone

 I searched the world over,
And thought I found true love.
 You met another and
 Phht! you were gone...

I met Porter Wagoner at the "Opryland" amusement park that was opened in the '70s.  Other than that fact, there wasn't much to recommend him or the silly park unless it included the roller coaster rides.

I gained an appreciation for country and bluegrass music working there.  Some of the live music acts were my favorites.

It was like a Nashville version of Disney World than anything else.  The park was a large figure-8... if you got lost, all you had to do was keep walking until you found yourself back at the exit.

I'm glad you enjoyed them.  It always brings a smile to my face.

'Orange Blossom Special' is one of my favorites.  Flatt and Scruggs put out some great music.

My tastes in music vary. Mainly an old 80's new wave, dark wave, dance person. But today I got a hankering for an opera song. Yep Opera, of which I probable only know 4 or 5 to be honest.

I had previously heard it in "Life is Beautiful" that wonderful little comedy movie. But it was also featured in the more recent movie with that liberal George Clooney.

Anyway, yeah, a durn Opera song that sounds heavenly to me.

P.S. I took a few hours and went through a lot of the back music yall posted. Some I liked, some I didn't. I don't do much hard rock or rap. Surprised how many of the old old songs I remember due to grandmother always have an oldies station playing in the background. Muzak I guess is how one would describe the music, but it served a good education in 20's to 60's songs for a kid.

I always loved Blondie - Heart of Glass, but this song so reminds me of her song yet is individual in it's own merit. I find I actually prefer it.

Arcade Fire - Sprawl II

In the 80's there was an amazing strange songbird of a singer called Kate Bush... I fell in love her immediately (after introduction via college alternative radio).... One of her first songs was called "Wuthering Heights" which basically tells the story of changing of the ending of the famous novel. Of course we know Heathcliff and Cathy don't have happy endings.... well Kate's song tells a different story... It is a work of art....

But I like my music upbeat so thus this dance electronic remix of Kate's classic... Small nitch market for a song, but it fit me to a tee.

At my heart of hearts music wise, I guess old Big Country comes closest to being my favorite group. They had two songs that charted in the US, (In a Big Country and Look Away)....

But my favorite was "Wonderland".... offered on a mini-album between projects (The Crossing and Steeltown albums)... They were also doing the soundtrack for a well loved cult Scottish film called "Restless Natives"...

Anyhoo... here is Wonderland....

I like some Scottish and Irish music at times. The Waterboys hit few sweet spots with me over the years, but one song from their first album really spoke to me. Not only did it have a great instrumental folk flair, but it's subtle mentions of Christianity did my heart good.

This song is about a young lady newlywed that has just come to grips with losing husband at sea.

So much heartbreak... she opens her mouth and roars..... claws her face with her nails till it bleeds... poor bare feet... My mother is there and her voice is soft... she pulls Gala close...

The sailors on the seas tonight are in ships that GOD made.... pulls lost souls aboard...

I don't speak or read japanese, so there is a bit of a story how I ended up here:

I was pecking around in a junk market way out in the middle of nowhere, and came across an entire folder of 78s from Camp Sakai and the 8th Army during their occupation of Japan.  They are all Japanese Columbias, Victors, King, and other various labels.  A couple are ethnic tunes, while others are straight-up attempts at copies of our music from the time, such as this Japanese rendition of "Buttons and Bows".  Aside from the record company logo being curiously scratched out on most of the records (and the Japanese characters giving the name of the song), the records are in pristine, almost unplayed condition.  All of them have their original sleeves, with some of them marked "Made in Occupied Japan", or "Specially made for 8th Army Exchange."  Several of them even had tiny slips of paper with the lyrics in Japanese inside of the sleeves (from the factory).

If I get the time, I'll post a couple of photos in the Sandhills forum.

Thanks Battle, I remember the song well.

Your comment takes me back to late 60's when I had my first record player. Some kinfolks gave me a huge box of records to do with as I please. Unfortunately I didn't know that the record player needle I had was eating the records up little by little with time. I played some records until they were just a bunch of silver dust. I ended up killing dozens of 78's and 45's. 78's of classics and opera to 60's rock and roll, from Beetles to Monkeys all died a slow painful death.

Cheap players killed 8 tracks to cassettes later on, but at least my new record players were far nicer to the format. So I bought records and recorded them to cassettes because I could replace them. News came out that cd's would last, but I found out early that they also were subject to proper care (scratches to humidity).

Now days I just tend to do digital, and even have a usb record player to convert to digital (still in the box never opened).

What is the sandhills forum? I may be too new to view (and that is ok, I will wait my turn).

I liked a little Scottish, Irish rock from the 80's (and 90s)... Waterboys, U2, Big Country, etc... but I also liked a few unknown goodies like the ditty below... with just touch of country twang sound.

Group: Hinterland.... Song: Dark Hill

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlODyJgZ3m4

They did several catchy songs... Desert Boots was probably my favorite...

Feast your eyes on this.  For anyone who has ever watched some award show and suffered through some has-been embarrassing themself performing some hit from years ago, this video is a refreshing change.  Watching her body shimmy underneath that purple dress is mesmerizing.
